Additional ideas

• Use something other than a gargoyle, maybe a dragon or skull.
   
• If you have lots of Christmas lights around you could mix in some orange and pinks, and maybe even a few blinker strings.
   
• Direct a light from the top of the fireplace down.
   
• Drill out the eyes and place a few LED's in them
